Online Survey

Hello Slo-Pitch Players

With valuable assistance from Lorne Abugov, we have established an online survey as a new communications tool to obtain your ideas and input into league operations and rule changes. It is important to emphasize, however, that the continued success of our league strongly depends on the support and participation of all of its members. With this in mind, our first survey consists of two key questions that have come up from our 2023 year-end survey and generally throughout the year from players: 1) adjusting the start time of the two games each Tuesday, and; 2) the overall length of the regular and playoff season. We have added a third question dealing with the home run rule to provide more content to our inaugural survey attempt.

The survey is easy to complete and should not take more than a minute to do. I ask that you please take the time to complete the survey as the results will provide the basis for making any improvements to the league’s operations. A healthy response rate and a clear statement of support or non-support are key to making informative decisions.  After completing the survey, if you have any comments about the questions or our ongoing use of surveys in general, please email me at ottawa60plusslopitch@gmail.com.

The survey will close on Tuesday March 26.

The link to the online survey is https://mainstreeter.surveysparrow.com/s/Softball-League-Rule-Changes-Survey/tt-fx3Y6mJWS6s7t95zVuQUZQ .

There is also a link available on our website at ottawa60plusslo-pitch.ca.

Thank you and I look forward to receiving your feedback.

Registration Udate

Hello Slo-Pitch Players

I would like to first thank everyone for submitting your registration for the 2024 season and second to welcome all new players to our league. We had a great response and have a full roster for a 10-team league. The next step is to confirm the 10 team captains who will then get together with our VP of Operations to select members for each team with the overall aim of achieving the best balance possible. You will hear from your team captain after the completion of the selection process. Our season is planned to start on May 7 subject to field conditions.

We will also be emailing out an online survey shortly asking for your input on a couple of important questions. So please keep an eye out for it. You can also visit our website for up-to-date news at https://ottawa60plusslo-pitch.ca/ .

Thank you,

Robin Boyd, President

Registration for 2024

Hello Everyone,

Registration for the 2024 Slo-Pitch season is now starting. Although the RA has increased their field fees by about 13%, the Executive Committee decided to keep Registration fee at $85 – the same as last year.

Registration Form for Returning Players
Registration Form for New Players

There are also two new items in this year’s registration form. 1) We are asking if you want to purchase a League cap for $10. The total price is about $20 and the League will contribute 50% towards the purchase price. 2) We are also asking if you would like to be a Volunteer Umpire. A Volunteer would umpire the game either before or after their own game. They would not umpire a game they are playing in. This is an important new initiative on part of the League in an effort to make umpiring of games fairer and more consistent. It should also speed up the games.  We encourage you to please consider becoming a Volunteer Umpire. More information will be provided to the Volunteers later.

The Registration form is a fillable PDF format allowing you to directly enter the information. Save the Registration form on your computer, open it and input the required information and then return the completed form by email to ottawa60plusslopitch@gmail.com  by March 8, 2024.

You may find that you cannot fill in the form on your cell phone or other mobile device. If you prefer, you can also print the from and complete it manually.  You can then either mail the completed form to Ottawa 60+ Slo-Pitch League, 6084 Willowbark Drive, Orleans, Ont. K1C 5T8 before the due date or take an image of the completed pages with your cell phone and email them back. Another option is to enter your information directly into an email message following the same order as shown in the registration form.

Please note that the Waiver form will be available when you show up at the field for your first game. It must be signed before you can play.

We will also send reminders as we get closer to the due date to return the Registration.

A reply back by email would also be appreciated if you don’t plan to return to our League so that we can maintain an accurate and complete player database.

If you have any questions or technical difficulties, please get back to me by email.

I look forward to seeing everyone back on the baseball diamond and to having another successful and fun summer playing ball.

Robin Boyd
President, Ottawa 60+ Slo-Pitch League

Happy New Year

Hello Ballplayers
Happy 2024! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.
Winter has arrived, dashing any hopes that this would be the year that we escape it without getting frozen or buried in snow. The experts are predicting a milder than usual season and I am fine with that.
There are only 4 months left until the start of the softball season! Your League Executive team is already at work planning and preparing for the upcoming season.
Now that 2023 is over, our Treasurer, Chery Ferguson, has closed the books for the year and has prepared the Year-end Financial Statement which is attached for your reading pleasure.
I hope that everyone is returning for the 2024 season and that a few newcomers will join us for another great summer of softball and socializing.
As we prepare for the upcoming season, you will be receiving a variety of messages over the next 4 months, with the 2024 registration process starting in March.
Happy New Year to all and we’ll see you in May.
Best wishes…Robin BOYD, League President

Remembering Mark Cosgrove

It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of one of our Ottawa 60+ players. Mark Cosgrove passed away December 18, 2023 after more than a year of challenges and setbacks from cancer.  Anyone who had the chance to play with him, knew that he was well liked by everyone. He will be sadly missed. Our condolences go out to his family.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held in the Spring of 2024.  Details will be provided when they are made available.

Player Survey Results

Hello All 60+ Slo-Pitch League Members:

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to thank our members who took the time to complete our 2023 Survey. We received a total of 46 completed surveys representing approximately 1/3 of our total membership – a pretty good response rate for surveys of this type. Overall, the results indicate that our League continues to effectively meet its mandate to support a playing environment of fairness and safety while promoting good sportsmanship, respect and fun. Get the summary report of the survey results HERE.

The survey results provide us with a lot of ideas around how to further improve our League operations and activities. One common theme, for example, involves looking at how we can improve our umpiring of games including the interpretation, clarification and enforcement of rules. There was also significant interest in a proposed pre-season baseball clinic and in volunteering in community outreach. We will develop more specific action plans on these items as well as others during the off-season. We are also considering establishing an online polling capacity where we can easily ask members of their support for particular issues that were identified, for example, from the survey results. Finally, there are some suggestions that can be readily and successfully achieved.

Thank you again for your participation and continued support.

Robin Boyd, President

Recognizing Ed’s Salvage

The Ed’s Salvage team got together and purchased a plaque to commemorate their Consolation Trophy win and to acknowledge Ed’s ongoing sponsorship. His wife, Teresa Caron, played in the league for several years. Sadly, Teresa passed away after a battle with cancer, and Ed continues the sponsorship as a tribute to her.

John Delong presented the plaque to Ed Caron in his yard near Arnprior.  He was greatly appreciative, and we thank him sincerely for his support .
